WALKING THE ALGARVE FROM TAVIRA

Walk and explore the Algarve's open countryside with pretty villages, historic monuments and recognized natural reserve areas like Ria Formosa.
The Algarve is famous for its fine beaches, golf courses and beautiful coastline but, it is generally not thought of in terms of open countryside; it is however truly wonderful rambling country.
We will explore the surrounding villages, located on fertile limestone and characterized by an abundance of orange and lemon groves, olive, carob, fig and almond trees scattered in fields full of flowers.
keen bird-watchers may wish to visit Castro Marim in the fens and marshes of the “Reserva Natural do Sapal “, famous for their flamingos, or enjoy other local sightseeing tours.
Tavira Local Area
Tavira is architecturally, one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve. Its origin dates back around 2.000 BC, and during the Moorish occupation the fishing industry of this town was of great importance. In the 17th Century its port, located at the Gilão River, played a significant role shipping wine, salt and dried fish. After the earthquake in 1755 the town was completely rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings and 37 churches. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo has been erected on the site of a Mosque.
Tavira still is an unspoiled jewel at the eastern end of the Algarve. Located about 20 miles from the border with Spain it is an old, attractive fishing town, which still retains its original charm. Fishing is still a mainstay of the local economy and the fishing boats are moored just beyond the old market. Sometimes referred to as the Venice of the Algarve, with some fine Renaissance architecture, numerous churches, tree-lined squares and a certain romantic air. You will find fine examples of medieval houses complete with Gothic windows and doorways.
